Nice Things People Have Said About My Writing:

Reviews of Fairfield (2010):

The storytelling is engrossing. The casting is excellent — the lead actor shows depth and sensitivity and captures Rodes’s conflicts well. The film does a great job of capturing life in a small town today. The audience can easily empathize with these young people and see ourselves in them. You evoke the anomie and quiet desperation in our country at this moment in our history. The script is well-constructed and allows the audience to get to know the characters and follow them in a natural way. As I did when I read it, I like the way the plot about the theft of the documents creeps into what seems more like a series of character vignettes. That development comes out of the characters and is a logical development of their behavior. Your seemingly loose structure is actually rather rigorous, which keeps the audience attention throughout.

This script did an excellent job of capturing the feel of small town living. The different social groups all had a distinct feel and it was beautiful to watch them come together at the end. This also seems to be a raw interpretation of post-college life. Rodes struggle with his lack of direction is dead on. The audience can really empathize with his search for meaning and direction in his life.

It has a real feel of authenticity in the way Rodes adapts to having his own freedom. He feels like a character true to his age and the journey he is on is all too familiar for anyone who has reached that point in his or her life. He makes boneheaded decisions and talks in the manner of the time. Strong themes of nostalgia come through in the way he recalls the various groups he’s been a part of at one point or another.”

Fairfield caused a nice reaction with our committee which caused the delay for us getting back to you. As it stands, we have a story about a young guy trying to discover his path in life. He drifts between his roommates, ballers and gamers and is discovering himself in the process. There are some interesting scenes and the dialogue is quite good.
